The Hermle Clock Company was founded in 1922 by Franz Hermle in Gosheim (Wuerttemberg), Germany. Within ten years, the company became an industry leader and known as one of the world’s most contemporary and efficient manufacturers of clock movements. Following his death in 1953, the prosperous Hermle Clock Company was handed down to Franz’s four sons. Today, in its third generation, Franz Hermle and Sohn employ over 500 people. With four locations in Germany and a manufacturing facility, Hermle Black Forest Clocks, in Amherst, Virginia, Franz Hermle and Sohn export clock movements, parts and accessories to over 100 countries worldwide.
Franz Hermle and Sohn manufacture clock movements for various clockmakers, i.e. Howard Miller, Seth Thomas, Mason Sullivan and others. Therefore, you may actually have a Hermle movement marked with the purchasing clockmaker’s name. Clockmakers who order in volume from Franz Hermle and Sohn are allowed to stamp the movements with their name. Nearly 75 percent of replacement movements sold by Dakota Clock Works are Hermle.
If you look at the back plate of the movement, you will likely notice a two-digit number located above other numbers, i.e. 77. This is the year the movement was made - 1977. Below, you will notice a set of three to four numbers followed by a dash (-) and three additional numbers, i.e. 451-033. If there is a pendulum, a two-digit centimeter (CM) length will be found beneath that set, i.e. 114CM.
