Frank Herschede was born July 30, 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the age of 16, he began apprenticing as a watch and clock repairman. In 1877, Frank went into business for himself and started manufacturing clock cases and eventually mechanical movements. Frank’s clock business was incorporated under the name Herschede Hall Clock Company in 1902.
In the early and mid 1900’s, cases and movements produced by the Herschede Hall Clock Company won awards at several expositions and were vended across the country. The company also offered a new melody, the Canterbury Chimes, in addition to the Westminster and Whittington Chimes. During World War I, clock movements were in high demand because the American market was cut off from European manufacturers; therefore, the Herschede Hall Clock Company experienced much success.
Frank Herschede died in 1922 at the age of 65. His son, Walter, followed in his footsteps and became president of the company. The Herschede Hall Clock Company began to experience financial difficulties in 1960. In 1972, a still struggling Herschede Hall Clock Company merged with Howard Furniture and Briarwood Lamps to form Arnold Industries Inc.
