Friedrich Mauthe started a small clock factory in Villingen-Schwenningen in 1844. By 1899, the Mauthe clock factory was producing clock cases in addition to movements. It is said, just before the war, 60 percent of all German-made clocks imported by the United Kingdom were made by Mauthe. The Mauthe factory ceased production in 1976 due to economic hardship.
