The Dakota Clock Works oil kit is not a cure-all for clocks in need of professional service. If your clock has stopped, adding oil may bring it back to life for a short time, however, it may also cause permanent damage. Visit us at Dakota Clock Repair to have your antique or modern clock restored.

Adding oil to a stopped clock will dissolve the grit in the bearings, grinding your clock to a potentially irreparable state. Our oil kit is not intended to resurrect a stopped clock. The purpose of an oil kit is to properly lubricate a running clock in order to maintain its function.

Below, notice a backside sketch of a typical clock. The circles represent oil wells that occasionally surround pivots (indicated with black dots). Not all clocks have oil wells. For those that do, the object is to place a very small amount of oil in the oil well, where the pivot and clock plate meet.

To begin, remove your clock from the case. Wipe off any obvious drips of existing oil.

Load the applicator by dipping the tip approximately 3/8” into the oil. When you remove the applicator, a small drop of oil should appear on the tip. This is the correct amount of oil.

Apply the oil to each pivot on both sides of the clock. Some pivots on the front of the clock may be difficult or impossible to oil. Oil hard-to-reach pivots from between the plates. Important:  Do not oil levers or gears! Gears are meant to run dry.

For the smallest diameter pivots near the top of the backside, one applicator of oil is adequate. You are not trying to fill the oil well. In most cases the oil you apply will be sucked into the bearing, lubricating the surface. All other pivots should receive one to two applicator dips of oil.

Near the bottom of the clock are three pivots, typically two to three times larger in diameter than the others. These are the pivots for the winding arbors. They do not usually have oil wells. Add one extra applicator of oil to these three pivots.
